The format is two boxes and a promise: an indoor unit cooling one room, an outdoor condenser rejecting the heat, and refrigerant pipework marrying them. It is the right choice when rooms are cooled individually, when the building already allocates condenser positions, when budgets matter, and when you want faults isolated: one unit down means one warm room, never a warm home. Most Dubai apartments and a large share of villa extensions run exactly this logic. Real figures, current market: quality inverter units supplied and installed typically run AED 2,200 to 4,500 per room depending on brand and capacity, value fixed-speed units land below that band, and premium marques above it. Installation labour alone, where you supply the unit, starts near AED 500 with piping runs, drainage and electrical work itemised rather than surprise-billed. The number to interrogate in any quote is what it includes: vacuum staging, weighed refrigerant charge, proper drainage falls and commissioning readings are the difference between a real AC installation and a delivery. Tonnage is cooling capacity, and Dubai rules of thumb start sensible: roughly one ton per 12 to 15 square metres of standard-height room, so a typical bedroom lands at 1 to 1.5 ton and living spaces at 2 to 2.5. The rules bend with reality though: glass walls, west-facing exposure, top-floor ceilings and kitchen heat all push sizing up a step. Both sizing mistakes cost you: undersized units run flat out and die young, oversized ones short-cycle, dehumidify badly and waste capital. We size from the actual room, not the floor plan, and put the arithmetic in the quote.

In this climate, almost always. Fixed-speed compressors are binary, hammering on and off with full-load starts that spend electricity and wear components; inverters modulate continuously, sipping at partial load through the long hours that define a Dubai summer. The running-cost gap shows up on DEWA statements month after month, and across the unit’s life it typically repays the purchase premium several times over. The honest exceptions: rarely used rooms and short-horizon rentals, where the cheaper fixed-speed unit’s arithmetic can still win. We quote both when the case is genuinely close.

The invisible stages that decide the unit’s whole life: pipework sized and flared correctly rather than approximately; a vacuum pulled and held to prove the circuit dry and tight before any refrigerant moves; the charge weighed to the nameplate rather than guessed by pressure; drainage run with actual fall to an actual drain; electrical work sized to DEWA standards with a proper isolator; and commissioning readings handed over as your baseline. Well-installed and annually serviced, ten to fifteen years is a fair expectation, with the tropical-rated veterans famously exceeding it. What kills them early is never mystery: installations that left moisture in the circuit, condensers suffocating in sand because nobody washed them, refrigerant leaks topped up instead of repaired, and filters left to choke airflow until compressors overheat. Every early death we attend traces to one of those four. The annual service exists precisely to interrupt them, and it costs less than any of their consequences.

Possibly, but the odds say clean first: matted filters and coils cause most weak-cooling complaints on this format, and refrigerant only leaves through leaks, so a unit that needs gas needs a leak repair more. The honest sequence is diagnosis before refills: airflow restored, then pressures read, then any leak found and fixed before a weighed recharge through our gas service. Anyone topping up your unit annually is renting you your own refrigerant, and the habit eventually bills you a compressor.

That is the format’s superpower. A garden room, a converted garage, a maid’s room upgrade or an extension gets its own independent cooling in a day’s work, with no ductwork disturbed and no shared system to unbalance. The planning questions are placement ones: an outdoor position with breathing space, a sensible pipe run, somewhere honest for the drain. Wall-mounted units carry most of these jobs; where walls are wrong for it, floor-standing and compact formats fill the gaps. One room, one unit, one decision.
