The middle ground, a hum that strains or a new vibration through the wall, deserves a booking within days. Rattles are the trade’s good news: overwhelmingly they are something loose rather than something broken. Panel screws back out with vibration, filter grilles seat imperfectly after cleaning, debris rides the blower, and mounting bolts relax with age. Each of those is minutes to fix once found. The rattle worth more respect is the one that speeds up and slows down with the fan, which points at the blower wheel itself, or a rattle from the outdoor unit that arrived suddenly, which can be a fan blade meeting an obstacle it should not. Both remain modest repairs when caught early.

Buzzing is electricity complaining. The classic sources: a contactor chattering as its contacts wear, a capacitor straining to start a motor it can no longer quite lift, loose wiring vibrating in its terminal, or a compressor trying to start against a fault. A buzz that ends in a click and silence is very often the capacitor story, one of the cheapest significant fixes in air conditioning. Because buzzing sits on the electrical side, it earns a professional look rather than a DIY poke: panels stay closed, and our meters do the touching.

Not usually, which surprises people. The outdoor unit’s loudest complaints mostly come from cheaper parts: fan bearings that grind or squeal, blades clipping a bent guard or a stray cable, sand-loaded fins forcing the fan to labour, or mounts that transmit ordinary vibration into extraordinary wall noise. A genuinely failing compressor tends to announce itself differently: laboured starts, knocking under load, breaker trips and a casing too hot to touch. Two very different candidates share this sound. Brief hissing at start-up or shut-down is often just refrigerant equalising, harmless and ignorable. Continuous or new hissing, especially near pipe joints and paired with cooling that has weakened, points at refrigerant escaping through a leak, which deserves prompt attention because every day costs gas and every gram lost stresses the compressor. A bubbling or gurgling variant suggests air in the drain or refrigerant flashing in a low circuit. Continuous hiss plus warm air equals book the leak test now.

Mostly physics and attention. Night lowers background noise, so sounds the daytime swallowed become audible; bedrooms sit closer to units than living rooms; and cooling cycles differently at night, with more stop-start transitions that showcase clicks, clunks and equalising hisses. That said, some faults genuinely are nocturnal: bearings complain more on longer continuous runs, and loose panels find resonance at the lower night fan speeds. Record the sound at the moment it happens; a night noise captured on a short video is diagnosed exactly as easily as a daytime one, and it saves the technician camping in your bedroom.

The sound largely predicts the spend. Loose panels, debris and mounting fixes sit at the AED 150 to 300 call-out end, often absorbed entirely by the credited diagnosis fee. Some noises, honestly, yes: a soft hum, gentle airflow sounds and the odd start-up click are just machinery being machinery. The ones that punish ignoring are the progressive ones: bearings that grind a little more each week until the motor seizes, vibration that slowly works connections loose, a chattering contactor pitting its contacts toward failure. The economics are consistent: the same fault costs a small invoice in week one and a larger one in month three. Noises that are new, worsening or rhythmic have earned their booking.

Vibration is the unit’s energy going somewhere it should not: worn rubber mounts, a fan or blower out of balance from accumulated dirt, or an outdoor unit whose fixings have loosened into a soundboard arrangement with your wall. It annoys neighbours as reliably as residents, particularly in apartments where the slab carries the hum sideways. Fixes are satisfyingly physical: mounts replaced, wheels cleaned and balanced, fixings torqued, isolation pads added. A vibration solved properly at its source is usually solved for years, which is more than the tighten-random-screws approach has ever managed.

Most noise is the sound of wear and dirt accumulating, so the honest answer is the unglamorous one: an annual maintenance visit that cleans the blower before imbalance develops, lubricates and checks bearings before they cry, torques panels and mounts before they rattle, and tests capacitors before they strain audibly.
